So my dad and I are up at the first ever Barrett Jackson’s Auto Auction in Connecticut. There are a lot of cool old muscle cars, as well as some more unusual finds (TV 2500, BMW Isetta, etc.).
I’m currently in line to take a ride in either a Hellcat or a Viper and am pretty excited. Dad isn’t a Dodge fan, so he elected not to have his brain slammed into the back of his skull.
The only major issue is they still seem to be figuring out how to run this thing. We elected not to buy advance 3 day passes in case it sucked. We got 1 day tickets yesterday and they had oversold the auction arena and the only seats available were behind the stage where you couldn’t see shit. Today, if you don’t have a 3 day pass you can only buy a “twilight” ticket, which gives you all day access to the paddock where the auction cars are staged and all the ride & drive events are located, but you can only access the auction arena after 5pm. They also had no maps of the event yesterday, but we’re throwing them at everyone today. I guess they are figuring out the logistics as they go.
Will post more later.

I heard they sold 36,000 tickets and can only hold 3,000 people. Fun.

I enjoy watching for the unusual or super retro modified. I honestly dont care if that mustang was one of only 50 mustangs that came with a shaker hood BUT blah blah blah paint code. Two identical vehicles BUT one different factory color. Thousands of dollars more?!
I had a previous post/rant about that. Special engine? Sure that’s pretty cool. A slightly different carb? No, that can be changed. Special paint? Nope, it can be painted, interior reupholstered, etc. Original factory paint? Probably looks like ass or you never drove it so shame on you. And it would probably look better with modern/fresh paint. Even the numbers matching concept I dont get. A purist I am not.

Not quite that bad but close. The arena seats 10k, they added about 1500 seats, but about as many are behind the stage and thus useless. But they did sell about 30k tickets.

Yes, there are beautiful cars at the event. But I paid $165 to view an auction and there were no seats available. Even worse, I heard that there were people who purchased tickets to bid ($400) on Friday who were not able to get seating in the Sun Arena.
I was at the Barrett-Jackson event today at Mohegan with my father and father-in-law today. I purchased tickets for the three of us to view the auction in the arena. Memorabilia was being auctioned until 12pm, thereafter cars were to be auctioned. We arrived at the arena to take our seats around 11:30.
I presented an attendant with my ticket and asked where our seats were, he responded that there was no assigned seating and that the entire upper-level was general admission and to sit “anywhere”. The upper-level arena was full, no seating was available. This was misleading because our tickets had section, row, and seat numbers.
I complained to a Mohegan Sun attendant that there was no seating anywhere, as did several other people who I saw. Their response was “there is nothing we can do, you will have to take it up with the Barrett-Jackson people”. We found a Barrett-Jackson representative and pled our case, his response was that “we always oversell tickets”.
If I were coordinating an event that had, let’s say, 400 seats I would not sell 600 tickets. Mohegan and Barrett-Jackson need to figure this out before next year, and they should be expecting letters of complaint.
